The first people to live in the area were the Hohokam, ancestors of the modern Pima and Papago tribes. The Hohokam built an extensive system of canals to irrigate their fields, and some of these canals can still be seen in the park today.

In the late 1800s, settlers began to arrive in the area, drawn by the promise of gold. Although gold was never found in large quantities, mining continued in the area until the early 1900s. Today, several old mines and mining cabins can be seen in the park.
